Let's get back to the basics!
Fiscal Responsibility
As a Business owner, I have the savvy and credentials to make sound financial decisions and will advocate for taxpayers. Recently, the current Board approved a budget with $6M annual deficit spending multiple years into the future…at this rate the district will be bankrupt by 2030! Too much wasteful spending and fund misallocation has plagued the district for years resulting in the need for a $169M bond measure back in 2016. I will not support future taxes and will use taxpayer money responsibly.
Parents’ Rights
The family unit is under attack by the state of California. This is evident in bills like AB1955 that would prohibit local school districts from enforcing existing parental notification policies requiring disclosure about a student’s gender identity/expression. Under this new law, a gender-confused child can receive counseling and reading material from school district employees without any parental knowledge and be led to the conclusion they were born with the wrong gender. The state and its employees have absolutely no right to keep secrets from families and parents, regardless of the issue. Parents, not the state, are responsible for raising children. I will make it a priority to have age-appropriate learning material in classrooms and advocate for parents’ rights.
Transparency
Transparency is of utmost importance in any school district; there can never be enough communication between leadership and parents. Currently, many parents and community members do not trust the direction of the district whether from the district’s mishandling of recent bullying concerns or the mistreatment of special needs families to name a few. My goal is to regain trust in the community so families feel comfortable sending their children to public schools again.
Student Achievement
It’s important that students are given the tools to succeed in life. Currently, only half of OVSD students meet the minimum standard in Math; this is unacceptable. We need to get back to the basics and make sure Math and English literacy is improved. I will also support programs that pique the curiosity of our youth and allow them to find their passion in life, while giving them the fundamentals to allow them to succeed.
No High Density Developments on School District Property
School districts have the authority to build high-density housing on school district property. AB2295 allows school districts to override local zoning and build 35 ft high affordable housing developments for government employees. This is a handout for school district and municipal employees at the expense of taxpayers; these large projects can only be funded with additional bonds. The State has announced they will financially incentivize school districts to pass bonds to fund these projects. I will oppose these high-density affordable housing developments and I will not sell district property to high-density developers.
